Woodbridge, 2016. Cm. 33x27, pp.176, tavv.103 a col. e ill. a col. e in nero n.t., tela e sovrac.

In this very latest presentation of the life and works of Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) the unmistakable artist of the Art Deco period, the author plunges further into the many facets of his works. New discoveries are recorded and facets of his works are presented for the first time. Paris in between the two World Wars - with its avant-garde music, dance and art - provided the backdrop and inspiration for many artists working in the city. Born in Romania, Chiparus studied in Florence and finally settled in Paris. his studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and eventually found his medium in the world of decrative arts. He would live the rest of his life in Paris. He is best known for his chryselephantine sculptures of dancing figures in outrageous theatrical costumes. Other subjects include children, athletes and everyday city life. He drew inspiration from Diaghilev's Ballets Russes - the famous Russian dance company that had just invaded Paris - as well as the Music Hall, very much in vogue at the time, and the exotic allure of Egypt and its recent discoveries. Despite his fame as a sculptor, Chiparus considered himself a painter, a medium to which he dedicated himself as much as he could.
To present a complete picture of Chiparus as the artist, a newly discovered painting and several sanguines have been included here, as have ceramics and works in spelter.

  • One of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco era, Demétre Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian sculptor who lived and worked in Paris, France. This book is a stunning monograph covering his work as both a sculptor and a painter

Over 23 years ago the first publication of Chiparus: Master of Art Deco brought this artist into the public eye. His name, lost in records and catalogues, was rejuvenated by Alberto Shayo's rediscovery of his works, effectively bringing artist and oeuvre back to life.

This book dwells on the sources and inspiration of the Art Deco movement, with particular emphasis on sculptures created by Demétre Chiparus. However, Chiparus considered himself a painter above a sculptor. In this latest version of the book, many unpublished pictures come to light as well as newly discovered oils and 'sanguines', confirming his aptitude in both fields.

Contents: The Early Years; Development of the Art Deco Style; The New Woman; Chiparus and the Art Deco Aesthetic; Chryselephantine Sculpture; Notes; Plates; Paintings by Chiparus; Care of Chryselephantine Sculpture; Fakes and Reproductions; Bibliography.
