Mantegna was born around 1431 in the Paduan countryside, the son of a carpenter. As boy he was taken to Padua, and was apprenticed to Francesco Squarcione, a mediocre painter who . however, had set himself up as a teacher of painting and boasted of having more than 137 pupils.
